Natural support in a contagious world!

Navigating uncertain times is no small feat, especially for parents worried about how to keep their children happy and safe. Measures such as school closures, frequent handwashing, and physical distancing that have been in place (and in some cases may still be in place) to protect against COVID-19 have also contributed to some anxiety among parents and children alike.

Although there is not enough data to recommend natural treatments for this particular strain of the virus, you should be aware that there are ways to naturally support your child's immune system so that it is stronger and more resistant to infections that may arise, including the seasonal cold and flu viruses caused by them.

Built-in security system

Imagine going through airport security for a family outing. The X-ray machine will scan the contents of your child's suitcase to determine whether they are safe on the plane. Your child's immune system performs a similar function, determining whether substances from the external environment can safely remain in their body. Dangerous substances such as germs trigger an immune response in which the body attempts to remove them from the body.

When germs settle

Germs refer to microorganisms that commonly cause disease, including viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. While the immune system does its best to avoid infection, germs often feel comfortable and stay welcome longer.

Viruses are particularly bad houseguests because they need a gracious host (like humans) to live, and they hijack our cellular proteins at every stage of their life cycle. Common viruses include influenza, rhinovirus (the main cause of colds), and human coronaviruses, which can also cause colds and lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

Do not touch

The best defense against infection is to avoid exposure to germs. We remain focused on preventing the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. This strain is transmitted from an infected person through coughing, sneezing, prolonged close personal contact, and touching surfaces.

While research continues on the behavior and spread of this coronavirus, the current understanding is that you become infected with the virus by inhaling respiratory droplets or touching infected surfaces and then touching the mucous membranes of your mouth, nose and eyes.

If you must take your children with you while shopping for essentials, hold their hand or bring a toy so they don't touch them. Help your child avoid touching their face by making it a game. For example, if they touch their face, have them scratch their knees instead.

Although the stability rates of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 are currently being studied, other human coronaviruses remain infectious on surfaces for up to six days at room temperature, suggesting that regular disinfection of surfaces at home may be helpful in preventing spread. After touching an object with infectious rhinovirus, it can remain on the fingertips and be infectious for up to 24 hours.

At home, the most contaminated surfaces are doorknobs, refrigerator handles, TV remote controls and bathroom faucets. Pay special attention to items your child handles frequently, including toys and touch screens, and ensure they are cleaned frequently and thoroughly.

Picky eating

Deficiencies in immunomodulatory micronutrients (including B vitamins, vitamins C, D and E, iron, zinc and selenium) impact a host's susceptibility to infectious diseases and alter the course and outcome of an infection.

In developed countries like Canada, the most common cause of nutrient deficiencies in children tends to be picky eating, as many are picky about eating lots of nutrient-dense foods like green leafy vegetables. Low vitamin D levels due to inadequate food intake or sun exposure can increase the risk of infections, particularly of the respiratory tract.

Restoring micronutrient levels to recommended levels increases resistance to infection and supports faster recovery. Especially for picky eaters, consuming food sources of these nutrients may not be enough. In this case, a multivitamin with minerals may be helpful.

exercise immunity

Physical activity has countless health benefits for children and adolescents, including improving cardiovascular health, promoting positive self-esteem, and reducing depression and anxiety.

Exercise can also be key to maintaining healthy immune function. Moderate intensity exercise has been found to strengthen the immune system. Researchers believe this is due to improved immune surveillance, reduced inflammation and improved psychological stress.

The Canadian Pediatric Society recommends that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity six or more days per week.

Keep spirits high

If your child continues to ask about COVID-19, they may be asking you for reassurance to help them cope with their fear. Do your best to explain the situation without creating unnecessary fear of germs, distrust of others, and worry about the future.

Chronic stress can impair immune function. Therefore, managing stress by playing, creating, exercising, meditating and talking to your child is one of the best ways to promote well-being during this time.
