I previously wrote an article1 about a quail egg powder called AllerGuard Express, which has been shown to relieve allergy symptoms in dust mite-induced allergic asthma2 and allergic rhinitis.3-5 In fact, in a randomized, double-blind, 2-arm crossover, placebo-controlled, clinical trial,6 allergy sufferers were able to do so just 15 minutes after allergen exposure and Breathing through the nose significantly better when taking quail egg powder tablets (18 percent improvement; p≤0.05 vs. placebo). Its mechanism of action is of particular interest.
Mechanism of action
Allergic rhinitis symptoms result primarily from a transient immune response to environmental triggers mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE). In people with a sensitized immune system, allergen-specific IgE antibodies are formed in response to environmental allergens.7-8 Worldwide, up to 40 percent of the population is sensitized (IgE antibodies) to environmental allergies.9
Certain outdoor and indoor antigens such as pollen, mold, animal dander and dust mites contain protease enzymes. When inhaled and coming into direct contact with the endothelium of the nasal cavity, these protease enzymes can injure tissues and trigger a transient IgE-mediated allergic inflammatory response.10In vitroTests have shown that protein fractions contained in quail egg, including ovomucoids and ovoinhibitors, act as serine protease inhibitors.11-12 By inhibiting proteases, bioactive components of quail egg powder help reduce the symptoms of an allergic reaction. New research suggests that this symptom reduction now extends to atopic dermatitis.
New research on neurodermatitis
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease with severe itching. The typical features of AD depend on age. PAR-2 is involved in the pathogenesis of AD, the protease-activated receptor. Its activation contributes to inflammation, itching and damage to the epidermal barrier. The ovomucoids and ovoinhibitors contained in quail egg powder are PAR-2 antagonists. To investigate the effects of quail egg powder on reducing ematous lesions, itching sensation and improving quality of life in patients with AD, an eight-week clinical trial13 was conducted on 281 patients with AD (age range: 4 to 69 years). . The dosage of quail egg powder was adjusted according to the age of the patients and the severity of the lesions. The results were that SCORAD (atopic dermatitis severity score) decreased at virtually all stages of the disease for every age group. In addition, itching subsided in 80.1 percent of patients and sleep quality improved in 47.8 percent of subjects within four weeks. In conclusion, this new study showed that quail egg powder (AllerGuard Express) is a good therapeutic option in the treatment of atopic AT.
