Inflammation are an important mechanism that is involved in many human diseases. Since longer inflammation for the host is harmful, higher organisms have developed protective mechanisms to ensure the dissolution of the inflammatory reaction to a limited and specific period and space. Once intended as a purely passive process of dilution of inflammation, the resolution is now regarded as a highly orchestrated process that is coordinated by a complex regulatory network of cells and mediators. 1
Dissolve mediators
Among the molecules that facilitate dissolution, the lipid mediators that have attracted the most attention are resolvins, protectins, and maresins, which are generated from omega-3 fatty acids. These endogenous anti-inflammatory anddissolving mediatorscounteract the effects of pro-inflammatory signaling systems and act as “brake signals” on the ongoing vicious circle that leads to unstoppable inflammation.
In fact, the same pro-inflammatory factors that initially trigger the inflammatory response also signal the termination of inflammation by stimulating the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators. Resolvins, Protectins and Maresins have been shown to reduce respiratory inflammation, skin inflammation, colitis, arthritis and post-operative pain. Studies have shown that these mediators increase over time during the inflammatory process.2-4

While all omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to the formation of resolvins, docosapentaenic acid (dpa), an intermediate in the biosynthesis of DHA from EPA, is a particularly effective forerunner of four different resolvins, namely RVT1 (2), RVT3 (3) and RVT4.5 Nevertheless dpa is not always in Omega-3 fatty acid products found. However, it can be found in some liver trans products.
