October Full Moon in Aries

If you've been following the Full Moon blog series so far, you know that each month, as the Moon swells to its largest and brightest state, it can seriously change how we feel. As the saying goes; 'as above, so below'; When the Moon is big and bold, our emotions can also feel bigger and bolder than ever before. While a dark new moon supports introverted practices, a full moon is the time to take action, reflect, and perhaps even shake things up. Although a full moon occurs during each lunar cycle, each full moon itself is completely unique. The season, the astrological sign the moon falls under, what is happening in the world around us, and where we are in our own cycle and personal lives, all culminate in creating a moment in time in which we can explore a different aspect of ourselves in a new light.

The Aries Full Moon on October 9ththbrings with it powerful healing energy – although, as you may have experienced; Healing is not always an easy process. As with the energy of many full moons, emotions and energy bubbling beneath the surface can quickly come to a boil, providing an opportunity to let go of what no longer serves us when the time comes. So read on to learn more about this month's full moon and the three practices to help you align with its particularly powerful energy.

Collect, nest and nourish

October's full moon is traditionally known as the "Hunter's Moon," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac, because this would have been the time when hunters would gather to search for animals and food that would get them through the long winter months. It is a time of preparing, gathering, storing and nesting, and although it is unlikely that any of us will be hunting, we can think of this as a time to gather the ingredients we need to feed ourselves this time of year and to prepare the home so it feels like a warm, welcoming refuge to sustain us through darker days.

Have the courage to let go

Aries energy is typically competitive, courageous, motivated, honest, generous and energetic, which at the time of a full moon can really cause emotions to boil over and sometimes even cause a few emotional burns! A full moon is the perfect time to let go and let go of old habits, possessions, or relationships that no longer serve us. So as this particular Full Moon offers the energy to heal and let go, use the courage and honesty of Aries to reflect on what you are feeling is dragging you down or draining you, and work on reducing the amount of energy you are giving to this part of your life. As cliché as it may sound, when the trees let go of their leaves and drop them, it serves as a poignant metaphor for us to be honest with ourselves and let go of something we no longer need.

Let your emotions flow

Emotions are energy in motion, and they must move! Previous healthcare systems understood that repressed emotions were a major cause of disease, and even in the modern Western world we are beginning to understand that stress, repressed sadness and grief can have very real physical consequences. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fall is the season when we should focus on caring for the lungs, which are said to store the emotion of grief. When we have unprocessed grief or sadness within us, it can show up as breathing problems, congestion, or shallow breathing. One of the ways we can help ourselves re-soothe, let go, and release held emotions is by practicing deep breathing exercises or even trying a guided breathwork class, which can be deeply transformative. As we are invited to heal and release this October Full Moon, allow your emotions to move and flow.

Tools to let your emotions flow:
