Get to know our models: The Reclaim Clothing Collection
Just like a great song, the right workout clothes can help you rise up and feel supported in everything you do. However, you choose to incorporate exercise into your day.
Yogamatters' NEW Women's (link removed) helps you reclaim your strength in your yoga practice and beyond with supportive, cropped tops, bras and leggings that provide low to medium support during your workout.
We took a moment to chat with our gorgeous models – and yoga teachers – from the Reclaim Clothing photo shoot to find out what it really means to reclaim your practice.
Why is it important to you that yoga is a diverse and inclusive practice?
"I come from a minority background and am a black woman. I am very passionate about creating access to a practice where there are no barriers, be it economic, cultural factors or anything else related to a person's identity. Yoga is for everyone."
What does it mean to you to reclaim your power or practice?
“For me, this is returning to your true and authentic self – reclaiming your power and the essence of practice beyond the asana.”
What brings you back to the mat?
The need to return to stillness of mind and regain my strength and suppleness of mind and body through my asana practice.
What was your favorite piece or detail from the Reclaim Collection?
"My favorite piece was the fuchsia pink legging. When I wore this I felt the color was amazing against my complexion and the leggings gave me incredible support while remaining breathable with great movement."
Why is it important to you that yoga is a diverse and inclusive practice?
"For me, yoga is a practice for humanity, for people. So if you are human, you should practice and you can reap the benefits. It is a practice that is about reclaiming our humanity and seeing through the illusions of existence. Those drawn to practice should come and feel welcome. Yoga is a universal practice, often geographically and culturally sensitive, but never the Basic principles and the fact that it is really for anyone who wants to practice and know what this practice is about. “
What does it mean to you to reclaim your power or practice?
"To reclaim my power for myself, I must know myself, have courage and heart, be close to the ultimate truth of love, take responsibility - and learn and grow from my foibles and transgressions. I believe that reclaiming power must also include standing up for and for those without power."
What brings you back to the yoga mat?
"The practice always centers me, grounds me and puts me in touch with something that is indescribable. I come back to the mat because I want to get back to myself. I come back to remember that every day is a gift. Yoga helps me work with the emotions that arise on any given day and gives me perspective. Coming to the mat also helps me sit, which I think is the most transformative aspect of the practice Yoga is. “
What was your favorite piece or detail from the Reclaim Collection?
"I love the colors and the material. Especially the cotton - it's so soft and comfortable - is really a dream to practice in."
Why is it important to you that yoga is a diverse and inclusive practice?
"Yoga mostly likes to keep itself immune to racism, sexism, ableism, financial elitism and all forms of discrimination. It is not. If the past year has taught us anything, I hope that the people, practices and places that claim to be exempt from these things are not - and are often the ones who perpetuate these broken narratives. The inclusivity and accessibility of the Questioning the organizations, spaces and communities we belong to is necessary and valuable work. It is not enough to simply say that “everyone is welcome” in your community. Instead, it is important to question what prevents people from participating in or accessing a space and, if you are truly committed to the community, what can be done to actively expand and break down the barriers within it. “
What does it mean to you to reclaim your power or practice?
"Reclaiming is such a beautiful word - it's done a lot for me lately. When it comes to reclaiming practice, it's almost always about coming home to myself. I feel more grounded and connected to my body and my experience. Let go of the way we've been told practice should look/feel/be like this and instead cultivate a curiosity about where I am in this moment today."
What brings you back to the mat?
"So many things, but lately I've been coming to my mat with questions and curiosity. It's a place I come to when I'm not sure how I'm feeling or what I need to do. Stopping for a few moments to sit or lie down or do Child's Pose gives me the time I need to check in and figure out what's next. Sometimes that leads to more movement, sometimes to journaling or to put on your favorite music and dance around. Every time I come back, something is different, something is new, something has changed. Every time I step on the mat I discover something about myself. “
What was your favorite piece or detail from the Reclaim Collection?
"The high-waisted, full-length leggings were to die for! I really loved the feeling of support and the side pocket was super handy. The colors were beautiful too."
