Plant power against childhood tumors: New hope through natural substances
Hemangiomas are vascular tumors that result from the proliferation, i.e. the rapid increase, of endothelium-like cells and are the most common tumors in children. Approximately 5-10% of newborns and young children are affected. In addition to hemangiomas, which are definitely benign tumors despite their growth potential, there are other vascular tumors such as hemangioendothelioma, which can show intermediate features between benign hemangiomas and highly malignant angiosarcomas.
Traditional therapy for these tumors may be limited by serious side effects, high costs, or traumatic influences. Diet plays a huge role in maintaining health, preventing diseases and treating them. The therapeutic properties of edible berries, seafood or medicinal plants have long been known and used in traditional medicine; a plant-based diet may prevent the development and progression of diseases associated with extensive neovascularization.
The purpose of our review was to highlight those natural treatments that patients with hemangiomas and vascular tumors can receive in the future, for the benefit of themselves and their families. Our review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metanalysis Statement. We used the Science, PubMed and EMBASE web platforms for the study and searched for the association of hemangiomas with naturopathic treatments/plant extracts in published articles. We found that natural extracts from plants and fruits provide cost-effective and safe treatments for hemangiomas and vascular tumors, as well as other forms of cancer.
However, further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to confirm the proposed signaling pathways in the tumors and to validate the improvement parameters after administration of natural products. The era of molecular targeted therapy and personalized medicine is approaching, and naturally occurring substances are very useful tools for the treatment and prevention of tumors. Plant extractives have strong specificity and pertinence, are nontoxic and have few side effects, and thus could become an emerging cancer treatment.

Natural extracts as an effective and safe treatment for hemangiomas and vascular tumors
The research presents a comprehensive overview of the potential role of natural plant and fruit extracts in the treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular tumors. Hemangiomas, the most common tumors occurring in newborns and young children, result from a proliferation of endothelial-like cells. It distinguishes them from other vascular tumors, such as hemangioendotheliomas, which can have characteristics intermediate between benign hemangiomas and highly malignant angiosarcomas. The study aims to highlight promising natural treatments for patients with hemangiomas and vascular tumors that could be beneficial for both those affected and their families.
The implementation of the review is based on the methodology of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. Databases such as Web of Science, PubMed and EMBASE were used to collect relevant studies, with a specific focus on articles addressing the association between hemangiomas and treatment with naturopathic remedies/plant extracts. This systematic review found natural extracts to be a cost-effective and safe option for the treatment of hemangiomas and vascular tumors, as well as other cancers. However, the study emphasizes that further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to confirm the proposed signaling pathways in the tumors and to validate the improvement parameters after the administration of natural products.
In the age of molecularly targeted therapy and personalized medicine, naturally occurring substances are becoming increasingly important for tumor treatment and prevention. In particular, plant extracts are characterized by their strong specificity and relevance, their non-toxicity and low side effects and could therefore establish themselves as a promising option in cancer therapy.
It becomes clear that the use of natural extracts in the treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular tumors is based on a sound understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms and promotes the development of effective, safe and patient-friendly therapeutic approaches.
