Does therapy really help people change, or is it just a placebo, a substitute relationship that offers comfort to those who are unable to form equal relationships in the outside world? Therapy can empower and enable people to change. But we must be aware that on the inner journey there are many pitfalls, echoes of illusions and deceptions, and many temptations. So we need to be sure that this change is change and not just imagined. So how can we be sure? The first rule is that you don't do it alone...

So we need to be sure that this is changingischange and not just imagined.

So, howcanare we sure? The first rule is that you can't do it alone. You need to have someone you trust - a therapist or a counselor - to act as a guide and whom you can get to know in an authentic way. Your therapist needs to become familiar with your quirks and especially the ways in which you avoid difficulties, hide secrets, sabotage your own growth, and positive or negative traits. Essentially, the therapist needs to know who you are underneath your character.

How can a therapist do that when we ourselves don't know who we are underneath our character? Character is communicated in various ways, just as the essential self is expressed in various ways. It is the therapist's job to "listen" to the whole body, psychological, intuitive, instinctive and extremely sensitive and considerate to the client. The client may have no idea what is being subconsciously communicated to the therapist.

Some people have tried to change through therapy and counseling and become disillusioned. The practice of psycho-spiritual psychotherapy by a competent practitioner is the specialized, focused approach for people to achieve lasting, personal change and transformation. There is a vast amount of knowledge, philosophy, research and of course psychology that supports the practice of psychotherapy. Although some practitioners are more competent than others for various reasons, and although sometimes a person desires change without knowing that another part of themselves is resisting change and winning, we can no more throw the baby out with the bathwater in the therapeutic field than we should simply throw away the toolbox because some of us don't know how to use it.

But therapy that offers hope isn't really enough for someone who wants change and is motivated to succeed, or who is depressed and looking for a way out, or who is suicidal and desperate for an answer to their fear. The first aspect of therapy we should understand is that therapy is not a commodity. You don't buy it like you would if you went to the chemists, the grocers, or the 7-Eleven. It's essentially a relationship and it's the relationship that makes it work.

The second aspect of therapy we need to understand is that maintaining focus is crucial. The therapist should keep you on your path and the client must be able to identify the relevant material and be willing to work on it.

The relationship is crucial because we were protected and defended in early, formative relationships. Through our relationship with the world, we have learned to hide and limit our creativity, enjoyment and enjoyment of life, and the realization of our potential. It follows that a healthy relationship that is supportive and nurturing, expansive and challenging, is the path to change and personal transformation. The therapy journey is a process that unfolds over time. With the right guidance, quality of relationship and mutual respect for the inner journey, transformation is possible and indeed likely.
