Dorete died two years ago. Dorete dies every morning. She dies every minute of every day. Two years ago, Dorete found the lifeless body of her beloved Christer on the floor.
Dorete paid for her son's Ivy League education at the University of Pennsylvania. He never acknowledged it. She also funded her daughter's college education. She never acknowledged it.
At thirty-four, her daughter-in-law almost died of breast cancer. Dorete and Christer stopped practicing psychotherapy and nursed her back to health. They sacrificed fees and customers for the love of family. Their son Yarrum, too busy for his wife, returned home across the continent to work as usual. Dorete and Christer received no recognition. Dorete's mother, Trudy, lay dying of cancer in a New Jersey hospital bed and was about to undergo a fatal needle biopsy of her liver to confirm the diagnosis. She was saved by Christer. He insisted, “We’re taking her to Sloan Kettering for a second opinion!” Sloan Kettering confirmed his caution and they performed a CT scan instead. The results were negative. The mother is alive at eighty-six years old. Christer died at the age of sixty-six. The family, including Trudy, denies Christer's life-saving intervention. The evil unleashed by sadism is denied.
As an adult, Dorete's daughter Sonja suffered from uncontrollable rage against men. Sonja suspected sexual abuse in her childhood. She recalled memories of her own father making her sexually uncomfortable during her youth. Christer provided weekly and on-call psychotherapy. Sonja gained the confidence and self-esteem she lacked and immediately stabbed Christer in the back. Her claim: “He never did anything for me, Mom!” The evil unleashed by sadism is denied.
The man who fathered Yarrum and Sonja has a criminal record. He was arrested "...forced another boy to perform oral sex on him by threatening bodily harm..." Yarrum and Sonja worship this man who fathered them, this man who also abused them and their mother. The evil unleashed by sadism is denied.
Dorete has a sister who is thirteen years younger. Her name is Gina. Gina was born with brain damage because her mother, Trudy, attempted an illegal abortion. The mother also forced twelve-year-old Dorete to witness this act. The evil unleashed by sadism is denied.
An adult woman, Gina, is severely disabled. Christer, who deeply loved all humanity, felt Gina's pain and secured her financial support from social services. Gina is finally financially independent. But Gina aches for the love that holds her mother back. The mother despised Christer because he had helped her younger daughter. You see, the mother doesn't love, she controls. Dorete shared her grief and guilt over Christer's death with her son. Yarrum, just an apple that hadn't fallen far enough from his father's tree, pushed and twisted the knife deep into his mother's heart. Yarrum's own distortions of the truth were put on paper to deceive everyone; in his own self-righteousness. He published an article about falsehoods based on his mother's cries of pain. Yarrum took advantage of his mother to profit from her soul wound - the haunting vision of her beautiful soulmate lying lifeless on the floor. Yarrum used this haunting vision, the primary source of Dorete's ongoing post-traumatic stress, as a weapon against her. The haunting vision that she tries to forget every day - the love of her life, larger than life, more compassionate, more loving, more intelligent, funnier, funnier and more alive than anyone she has ever known - now stiff and lifeless. She distorted and published the feelings she shared with Yarrum in confidence for the whole world to see. The evil unleashed by sadism is denied.
