Acupuncture for pubertal menorrhagia: Effective additional treatment discovered!

Puberty is a crucial period in an adolescent's life where many biological and hormonal changes take place. A challenge during this time can be so-called menorrhagia, a medical term that describes excessively heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding. These often occur because the body is still learning to regulate its hormones. A recent case report examined the effectiveness of acupuncture in a 16-year-old female patient with such symptoms.

Acupuncture, a form of therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), uses fine needles inserted into specific points on the body to regulate energy flow and promote healing. In this case, acupuncture was used as an additional treatment method to relieve the patient's menorrhagia.

After six days of acupuncture treatment, it was found that the bleeding had completely stopped. Further examinations showed that the size of the uterus and ovaries had decreased and the thickening of the uterine lining had completely disappeared. The patient's next menstrual cycle began on time, indicating improved regulation of her menstrual cycles.

Analysis of possible future developments

The promising results of this case study suggest that acupuncture may be a useful adjunctive therapy for young women with pubertal menorrhagia. This could lead to a change in current treatment practices, which have traditionally taken more hormonal or medical approaches. However, it is important to corroborate these results with further studies to confirm the long-term effects and safety of acupuncture for this indication.

Effectiveness of acupuncture for pubertal menorrhagia

The present study examined the effectiveness of acupuncture as a complementary therapy for pubertal menorrhagia, a condition characterized by prolonged and excessive menstrual bleeding from menarche to 19 years of age. The study highlights that this form of menorrhagia is often associated with an immature hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis, leading to persistently high estrogen levels and anovulation.

methodology

The treatment was carried out using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnostics. The diagnosis was based on the tongue and pulse diagnostics of the patient, a 16-year-old with irregular menstrual cycles and a bleeding period of 41 days. Acupuncture points SP4 (Gongsun), PC 6 (Neiguan), KI 14 (Siman), SP 10 (Xuehai), LR 1 (Dadun) and CV 6 (Qihai) were selected to relieve liver blood stasis. Treatment consisted of one 20-minute session daily for one month.

Results

conclusion

The results of this case study suggest that acupuncture based on a TCM diagnosis shows promising effects as a complementary therapy for pubertal menorrhagia. It can regulate the menstrual cycle by improving reproductive health. Nevertheless, further research is needed to evaluate the long-term treatment effects in more detail.
