19 Dietary Supplements That May Cause Liver Damage
This, my friends, is why I posit that people who take little to no supplements are often better off health-wise than those who choose to take a lot of supplements. The LiverTox database rates supplements and medications on a 5-point scale [A to E] to estimate whether a substance is known to cause liver damage. The scale is defined below: A = Known Cause B = Most Likely Cause C = Likely Cause D = Possible Cause E = Unlikely Cause E* = Suspected but Unproven Cause If the liver is impaired because it is doing its job...

Signs of liver damage

Liver damage is at the core of many health issues I see in clients. When the liver is compromised because it cannot do its job properly, all body systems are affected.
Below are the most serious signs of liver damage. However, it is important to know that there is a wide range of possible effects on your liver that are not always so obvious. Sometimes it takes days, weeks or months to see a noticeable effect, and at this rate it is difficult to associate it with a supplement or medication because the change occurs so slowly over time.
- Übelkeit oder Erbrechen
- Bauchschmerzen oder Schwellung
- Müdigkeit oder Schwäche
- Appetitverlust
- Dunkler Urin
- Gelbsucht (Gelbfärbung der Haut oder Augen)
- Es kommt leicht zu blauen Flecken oder Blutungen
Cholestasis, a disease that is considered a subgroup of liver damage, is particularly problematic. Essentially, it's when your bile (think of a flow of fluid that eliminates toxins and waste from the body through stool) becomes thicker and becomes stagnant in your bile duct. In nutritional therapy we often speak of bile stasis or bile stasis. It is extremely common. This is detrimental to your health and is directly linked to chronic fatigue, constipation, SIBO and other gut problems, estrogen dominance and poor detoxification. Imagine the strain on your detox system slowing down, building up, and the impact that has on your entire body.
Dietary supplements linked to liver damage
This morning I took a few hours to go through supplement research. Below are the most common supplements that I find people take, ranging from AC. I usually prefer supplements rated E or lower to truly consider them safe enough for my clients to take.
If you would like more information on any of the following, please visit the LiverTox database and perform a simple search to learn why each supplement is rated so highly.

- Ashwagandha
Probability score: C (probable cause of clinically apparent liver injury).
- Kava Kava
Probability score: A (known cause of clinically apparent liver injury).
- Grüner Tee
Probability score: A (well established cause of clinically obvious liver injury).
- Traubensilberkerze
Probability Score: A (Products sold as black cohosh are widely recognized causes of clinically apparent liver damage, but the specific ingredient or component responsible for the damage is unclear.)
- Aloe Vera
Probability score: B (probable but rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Garcinia Cambogia
Probability value: B (probably rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Hydroxycut
Probability score: B (probable cause of clinically apparent liver injury).
- Beinwell
Probability Score: C (when taken orally, a likely cause of clinically apparent liver injury due to sinus obstruction syndrome).
- Baldrian
Probability value: C (probably rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Kurkuma
Probability value: B (probably rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Kratom
Probability score: B (probable cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Schädeldecke
Probability value: B (very likely but rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Ba Jiao Lian
Probability score: B (probable cause of clinically apparent liver injury).
- Noni
Probability value: C (probably rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Eisen
Probability value: A[H] (well-established cause of clinically apparent acute and chronic liver damage when high doses are administered). Read more about iron overload.
- Vitamin A
Probability value: A[H] (well proven cause of liver damage when used in high doses).Read more about vitamin A toxicity
- Energy-Drinks
Probability value: C[H] (probably rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage when used in large quantities).
- Niacin (B3)
Probability value: A[HD] (known cause of clinically apparent liver damage, but only when given in high doses).
- Kupfer
Probability value: A[HD] (known cause of acute and chronic liver damage, but only when taken in high doses). Read more about copper overcharging.
While the following is not about supplements but rather popular Rx and over-the-counter medications, I thought I would also include them to highlight the often forgotten effects they can have on your health and why they often play a large role in the problem. This is especially true for those who have taken them daily for a long period of time.

- Ibuprofen
Probability value: A (known but rare cause of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Paracetamol
(Tylenol): Probability Score: A[HD] (well-known cause of liver damage, but severe cases only occur at high doses).
- Aspirin
Probability value: A[HD] (known cause of clinically apparent liver damage when high doses are administered).
- Antibabypillen
Probability value: A (known cause of various forms of clinically apparent liver damage).
- Antidepressiva
If, after reviewing the lists above, you notice some things that you take regularly, you should consider them as a possible cause of your health symptoms.
Liver test
If you suspect that your liver is affected in any way, testing can be an invaluable tool for obtaining further data about the situation. Below are some general labs that can help you:
- Umfassende Stoffwechsel-Panel-Marker – AST, ALT, Bilirubin, alkalische Phosphatase
- Nährstoff-Blutlabore – Vitamin A, Eisen, Kupfer (beachten Sie diese beliebten Nährstoffe, die in der Wellness-Kultur oft übertrieben werden, und ihren Zusammenhang mit Leberschäden oben!)
- Andere Blutlabore – GGT
- Leber-/Gallenblasenultraschall zur Untersuchung von Gallenstau und Fettleber
Do you need help supporting your liver?
When it comes to getting healthy, sometimes it comes down to what NOT to do. Trying too hard to get healthy by taking more supplements often has disastrous results.
If you need help getting some labs to give you more information about your liver health, don't hesitate to contact us.
