Design
double -blind, placebo -controlled, randomized study
participant
76 women between 50 and 75 years. The intervention group comprised 39 and the placebo group 37. The exclusion criteria included smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dementia, stroke, head injuries, alcohol abuse, clinically diagnosed anxiety, depression and psychiatric disorders. DIV>
participants were excluded if they earned “antidepressants, medication for anxiety, high-dose anticoagulants, anticholinergics or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors”. … The participants had to do without a supplementation with vitamin E, multivitamins, B vitamin complex, Gingko Biloba, Fischöl and St. John's wort. ”
Intervention
Oral multivitamin mineral herb tablet (MVMH) (Swisse Women’s 50+ Ulivite) or suitable placebo. The MVMH contained folic acid; Vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, B6, B12, C, E and zinc in the recommended amounts of daily dose (RDI). It also contained B3, D3, calcium and magnesium below the RDI as well as 18 herbs and 3 probiotic tribes. A complete list of the ingredients and their doses can be found on the company's website.
The depression and anxiety stress scale (dass), the State Anxiety Scale (SAS), the bond loader Mood/Visual analog scales (VAS) for stress, fear, concentration, physical exhaustion and mental exhaustion were used.
The mood was evaluated before and after completing a cognitive battery test for cognition. The participant then consumed either mvmh or placebo. One hour after taking this dose, the mood was rated again before and after a cognitive battery test.
Results of results: Acute effects of multivitamins (MVMH) on cognition and mood were determined 1-2 hours after taking placebo or mvmh. All results were secondary results from the study "Behavioral Effects of Multivitamin Supplements", which was a 4-week study.
The cognition was assessed using the Computerized Cognitive Battery (Succab) stimuli from Swinburne University.
important knowledge
mood: There was a significant reduction in the dass scor after the intervention in the MVMH group, but not in the placebo group ( p = 0.001). Also in the MVMH ( p = 0.003). Only the MVMH group had a significant reduction in the VAS load assessment ( p = 0.001). The fear reduction did not achieve statistical significance for both groups.
cognition: There were no significant differences in cognitive measures in both groups.
Comment
There are many studies that indicate that the use of multivitamin minerals (MVM) can improve the mood and/or perception. These studies have specifically examined the use of MVM over 4 weeks or more. The current study that is discussed here is most fascinating because of the immediacy of its effect on mood parameters. It is surprising that a single dose of an MVM could have a measurable effect on the mood.
The effects of B vitamins for stress and mood have been examined in long-term studies, and most of these studies have suggested benefit. 2–5 B vitamine play a central role in the regulation of neurotransmitters both directly in their synthesis and indirectly by the influence of S-adenosyl methionine (seed). Depression was associated with a lack of B vitamins, in particular B12 and folic acid.
B vitamins play a central role in the regulation of neurotransmitters both directly and indirectly.
Additional nutrient deficiencies can also contribute to mood disorders and cognitive difficulties. Vitamin D deficiency is associated in older people with a bad mood and cognitive dysfunction. 7 zinc deficiency is associated with depression. 8 At least 5 studies have shown that a low selenium content and "poorer mood" are connected. Otherwise have a lack of a certain nutrient of the addition used. It is expected that such a saturation leads to an improved mood, but how can it have an effect in just 1 hour?
The authors of the current study admit that there is still no explanation for such immediate effects of the MVMH on stress or mood. However, they offer possible theories. It is possible that the MVMH acute improvements in the vascular endothelial function, which enables better oxygen and nutrient supply of the brain. It is also possible that mitochondria function will improve within 1 hour after consumption. Top values of nutrients such as folate are seen only 1 to 2 hours after taking, which causes the authors to claim that the assessment of changes in brain function at top blood flow points is not without reason.
The most plausible explanation that the authors do not emphasize is that the immediate effect of the MVMH combination on the mood is due to the herbs it contains, not on the nutrients. There were 18 herbs, all in the form of concentrated extracts. Some extracts corresponded to between 0.5 and 1.5 grams of dried herb. Some were classic "toning" herbs such as hawthorn, blueberry and daisel. In addition to their many effects, others could act as mild blood thinners (turmeric, gingko, grape seed extract). Two herbs special, helmet herb ( scutellaria lactiflora ) and withhania ( withhania somnifera ) should have an acute effects when taking it. Simply put, the title of publication is misleading. Most MVM supplements do not contain 18 herbal concentrates.
This publication is a good memory. As a clinician, we often have no time to deal with the method of methods of publications. However, if the results are surprising to run counter to a certain paradigm or seem to be pending for any reason, we should perhaps remember to analyze the details.
One last note: The current study showed no benefits for cognition. Other studies have suggested a benefit for cognition with an MVM over longer periods. 10–12 Since MVM of all kinds are usually taken every day over longer periods, it is more of an academic question whether it works acutely for cognition.
