Thousand Secret Names of Goddess Shakthi: Lalitha Sahasranama - Part I
Lalitha Sahasranama means a thousand names of Lalitha, the Divine Mother. It appears in the Uthara kanda of Brahmanda Purana, the last among the eighteen Puranas of the Hindus. It is in Lalithopakyanam, which means the detailed story of Lalitha, the Divine Mother. This is a dialogue between Sage Agastya and Hayagriva.
In this sacred text, a thousand names of the Holy Mother have been systematically arranged in a secret manner. The letters are arranged so that each name is protected by twenty-four sutras called Salakshara Sutras. No letter can be inserted or changed in this sacred text. Whoever recites these thousand names will receive wealth, health and ultimately salvation. This belongs to everyone, to all of humanity. Everyone has a right to these mantras. Anyone can say that.
Sage Agastya came to Kanchipuram in the south during one of his migrations from the northern Himalayas. He began a rigorous tapas, meaning penance, to find an easy path to salvation for each individual. Satisfied with his rigorous penance, Lord Hayagriva appeared with a horse's head, signifying wisdom, and granted him a boon. Agastya asked the Lord whether there is a way for poor, deluded people to realize mukthi, meaning salvation, through bhoga (enjoying worldly pleasures) on their own without resorting to austerities and penances. Hayagriva told Agastya that the easiest, safest and most direct way to attain both bhukthi and mukthi, meaning all desirable pleasures and powers in this life as well as ultimate freedom, is to contemplate Lalitha as the unified atma swarupini of all the seemingly multiple consciousnesses that prevail in the triple universe.
The thousand names of the Holy Mother then appear in the dialogue. This is the best Sahasranama which brings all benefits to the one who recites it. There is a deep secret in every single mother's name.
We will learn more about this in the second part of this essay.
