A thousand secret names of the goddess Shakthi: Lalitha Sahasranama - part I
Lalitha Sahasranama means a thousand names of Lalitha, the divine mother. It occurs in Brahmanda Purana's Uthara Kanda, the last one of the eighteen Puranas of the Hindus. It is in Lalithopakyanam, which means the detailed story of Lalitha, the divine mother. This is a dialogue between the wise Agastya and Hayagriva.
In this sacred text, a thousand names of the Holy Mother were systematically arranged in a secret way. The letters are arranged in such a way that each name is protected by twenty-four Sutras, which are called Salakshara Sutras. No letter can be inserted or changed in this sacred text. Those who recite these thousand names get prosperity, health and ultimately redemption. That belongs to everyone, all of humanity. Everyone has the right to these mantras. Everyone can say that.
the wise Agastya came to Kanchipuram in the south during one of his hikes from northern Himalaya. He began a rigorous tapas, which meant repentance to find a simple way to redemption for everyone. Lord Hayagriva appeared satisfied with his rigorous penance with a horse's head, which meant wisdom, and granted him a blessing. Agastya asked the Lord whether there is a way for poor, blind people, Mukthi, which means redemption to realize himself through Bhoga (enjoying secular joys) without using deprivation and repentance. Hayagriva said Agastya that the simplest, safest and direct way to achieve both Bhukthi and Mukthi, which means all desirable delights and forces in this life as well as ultimate freedom, is the view of Lalitha as the United ATMA Swarupini of all apparently multiple consciousness that prevails in triple universe.
The thousand names of the holy mother then come in dialogue. This is the best Sahasranama that brings all the advantages to the person who recites it. There is a deep secret in every single name of the mother.
In the second part of this essay we will find out more about it.
