Unawatuna Beach

Many places in Sri Lanka are associated with mythologies. Unawatuna of Sri Lanka has an interesting story from Indo-Sri Lankan mythology.

In the epic story of Valmiki, 'Ramayanaya', King Rama's brother Laxman is injured in battle. The Monkey King Hanuan is sent to bring medicinal herbs to cure Laxman. Hanuman, possessed of superior powers, cannot identify the right herbal plant. So he lifts up the whole mountain and brings it. A piece of the mountain falls in a coastal area of ​​Sri Lanka. The terminology “Una-watuna” gives the meaning “fallen down”. This area has since been known as Unawatuna.

Unawatuna is a coastal town in the southern Galle Province of Sri Lanka. The area is a major tourist attraction for its exotic beaches, places of historical value and associated with mythology, and for ecotourism related to the coral reef that protects the beach and a mangrove called Kadolana that serves as a buffer in the area's lagoons.

The beach is one of the twelve most beautiful and best travel beaches in the world. There are a significant number of tourists from all over the world to experience the endless beauty of the area.

Rumassala is believed to be the Brocken Mountainfall from the Hanuman story (see above). The mountain faces the sea and actually has a variety of medicinal herbs all over the mountain. Recently a Dagoba or a Buddha pagoda was built in the area called “Saama Chaithyaya” or the Pagoda of Peace. Many Buddhists, local and foreign, come to worship this throughout the year.

The coral reef that protects the beach is a paradise for nature lovers. These can be visited in boats or diving facilities are often found. The mantle stretches widely, creating a series of picturesque beaches and tranquil lagoons throughout. In the lagoons, the semi-salty water provides a perfect habitat for the growth of mangroves, locally known as kadolana. Kadolana creates an ecosystem full of beauty and very high biodiversity. Boat rides are available for tourists to visit the serene and cool mangrove caves that encompass many waterways in the area.

There are a number of five-star tourist hotels located in the relevant area. Some of them are designed as traditional Sri Lankan rest houses or modern hotels. The newly built southern expressway shortens the long driving hours to a very short express journey. But if someone wants to enjoy the view, they can always take the train or other means of transport along Galler Straße, which runs along the bank.
