Dormitory Feng Shui!
The typical dorm room is anything but comfortable. Most are described as a prison cell rather than somewhere where knowledge can be cultivated and expanded.
The goal of Feng Shui is to create the best possible environment for us to surround ourselves with. For a student, if their environment is set up optimally, in a way that promotes learning and success, then they are way ahead of the curve! Why not start your training with a little Feng Shui magic in the place where you'll be spending most of your time in the next few years?
Follow these simple feng shui tips for a feng shui dorm makeover!
1. Start with a clean slate!
Clean every inch of the new room, start over. Clean up the room and remove any negative energies left by others by opening the windows, letting in fresh air and lighting some incense or playing sound or music to cleanse the room! If you cannot light sage, take 4 small bowls and put sage or rock salt in them and place them in the four corners of your room to maintain clarity and serenity in your space. Replace them once a month if possible.
2. Color can be therapy!
If you have the opportunity to paint or accessorize the room, choose colors wisely. If you can choose your personal success colors (see our Articles tab on our website) or choose a color that will help you with what you want to achieve.
Greens for personal growth, prosperity, clear and stimulating. Red for energy, fame and reputation, blue and black for personal wisdom and career, white, gray and metallic colors for intelligence and learning. Avoid muted browns or yellows, as while these colors can slow down the energies around you, they add yellow and orange when you're feeling sluggish and your health hasn't been ideal. If you can't paint your walls, use these colors in accessories or artwork.
3. Sleep in peace!
Make sure your headboard rests on a solid wall, if there is a window, hang strong blinds and heavy curtains that can be closed at night. Make sure you can see the door when you are lying in bed.
4. Keep the energies flowing!
Clutter is the biggest problem in Feng Shui. Keep things neat and organized to keep your mind neat and organized. Use organizers and bookshelves to keep clutter to a minimum. When you enter your room, the space should feel clear and uncluttered, a great place to study, meditate or rest.
5. The ideal desk placement
If you have the luxury, your desk should be placed in the northeast corner of the room - the area associated with knowledge. Keep it tidy and make sure you have a desk lamp for easy studying.
6. Relationships – part of the experience
Do you want to strengthen your social life? Add a light (night light is great!) in the southwest corner of your room - this should jumpstart your social life! If it gets too crowded – turn off the lights!
7. Poison arrows
Sharp spots aimed directly at you while you sleep can undermine all your good efforts. In a small room they are difficult to avoid. If you have a bookshelf or desk with the corner facing directly toward your bed, soften it up by adding corner child guards to the ends! A cheap, quick solution!
8. Vote
Rest is critical and often difficult when living in a dorm room. At night, if possible, try to lock or cover any television or computer devices to ensure a good night's sleep!
