There is a quote from the writings on Ayurveda on one of Dr. Vasant Lads website. It is given as follows: "Ayurveda is beyond beginning and end. A science of eternal healing, it is likened to a vast ocean and the study of Ayurveda to swimming across. A true teacher can teach one to swim, but the swimming is over for the student;...it is a lifelong journey."

Ayurvedic cooking for self-healing” by Usha Lad and Dr. Vasant Lad – Book Review

After using it as a heartwarming cookbook, I managed to experiment and then appreciate the easy and natural ways to cure some common ailments like fever and cold. But as I open myself to the depths of learning that go into this work, the book reveals the microcosmic journey of swimming in the seas of Ayurveda. The fundamental principles that make up the human body such as the five elements, the three humors or doshas, the step-by-step processes of digestion according to Ayurveda and much more are covered in this book.

This book was written by Dr. Vasant Lad and his wife Usha Lad. Vasant Lad, BAMS, MASc, 'is a world-renowned Ayurvedic physician from India with more than 40 years of clinical experience in Indian medicine.' He is also the founder of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The book showcases the authors' meticulous work to present readers with the complex details of food and cooking, uniquely derived from the fundamentals of Ayurveda. Even those readers who have little background knowledge of this ancient method will find it easy to understand due to the simplicity and clarity in presentation.

Wherever possible, tables are used to facilitate reference. Sketches by Dr. Drawn by Lad himself gives readers a special appeal. It tends to relieve the reader from feeling any kind of heaviness while going through the exhaustive information provided. It would be beneficial to also consider publishing a large print version of the book, which I have not yet come across.

If you are not a healer, particularly not familiar with the ancient Indian system of Ayurveda, this book can be an excellent introduction to other life-enhancing works by Dr. Lad give. Another book by Dr. Lad titled “The Complete book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies” covers the same details of the basic principles of Ayurveda that are described in this text “Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-healing”. But I found this work to be a gentler introduction to this ancient healing system. Both works are rich in detail but have their own unique focus.

One of the problems with changing your diet to vegetarian food, according to a question and answer session with Dr. Because it involves getting enough protein. If you are one of those trying to adapt to a vegetarian diet, this book can give you the healthy picture needed to keep your health in balance. It offers a large amount of recipes and an exhaustive list of simple fruits, vegetables and spices. Dr. Weil mentions this as a “varied vegetarian diet” and also a healthier alternative.

One of the works by Andrew Weil, MD, that I first read was Spontaneous Healing. The works of Dr. Because and Dr. Lad are quite comparable in the area of healing, predominantly through natural means. Years before I read the works of Dr. When I met Vasant Lad, I used the works of Andrew Weil, MD. Dr's website, healing, nutrition and more.

I am also learning that many of us long to connect with the ways of our ancestors to live our lives better. “Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-Healing” is definitely a book that imparts such wisdom. It also contains an ambience that appeals to readers from both Eastern (India) and Western (USA) countries. A copy of this book that I own has become antiquated. It has been kept open on my kitchen counter several times.
