So what's going on with ginger - is it a spice or a herb?
Although most kitchen spice cabinets contain a glass of ground ginger, it is usually considered a spice and you don't think about adding ginger cabbage to add ginger spice to a recipe. Ginger spices are added to ginger-snaps, ginger bread, ginger-ale, ginger chicken and ginger-pumpkin cheesecake. Be honest, the spice "ginger" is required in many recipes. So is ginger a spice or a herb? Ginger is a spice. . . and. . . A herb.
By definition, herbs are the leaf components of plants and bushes used for seasoning food, medical applications or for the oil essences harvested for personal care products. An example of a herb would be the leaf parts of ginger, parsley, rosemary, lavender and coriander. Spices are harvested from flowers, seeds, bark or roots of plants or trees. Examples would be; Cinnamon (bark), coriander (seeds of the coriander plant), cloves, saffron and ginger root. They don't deceive their eyes - I have listed ginger under examples of spices and herbs. Coriander is also an intersection, the leaves of the plant are by definition a herb and the seeds of the plant are a spice called coriander. Coriander really confused me when I started growing herbs. I was looking for coriander seeds in the children's room. When I finally asked the employee for help, I received a seed package with "coriander seeds" that were written on the top of the package, and a beautiful picture of a healthy coriander herb plant on the bottom. This incident prompted me to buy a book about herb garden for the first time. The terminology between the classification of herbs or spices has largely become interchangeable depending on the culinary use, according to the American Spice Trade Association. Plants, seeds and roots used for medical properties are generally referred to as "herbs". Ground herbs that are used in cooking applications require "spice". Still confused? Maybe this example will help. Ground ginger (spice) is used to bake cookies. Ginger root (herb) is soaked in cooked water for tea that is used in a medical way.
ginger is an extremely versatile herb for medical purposes. Ginger root can be used for chewing to alleviate nausea (travel sickness). It can be soaked in teas to relieve the constipation of the breast, relieve gas pain and flatulence (chop root and add baked beans), asthma, bronchitis and the list continues. Ginger is an extremely versatile spice for culinary applications. Desert recipes, beers, Soda flavors and this list continues.
herbs or spices, ginger is one of my favorites!
