Once they finish the diet and realize it didn't work, they go back to eating the way they always did. They are so surprised that they actually gain weight, but what they don't realize is that diets actually contribute more to weight gain than anything else.

If you are looking for a healthy diet to lose weight, get healthy and improve your overall physical condition, the diet to follow is actually very simple. There are a few do's and don'ts and you will find that the following tips will help you follow a healthy eating pattern while eating right:

• Even if you find it easiest to fry meat, chicken, eggs and fish, take the time to find oil-free cooking methods. Eggs can be boiled, poached, or scrambled without oil, and the other proteins can be baked, fried, grilled, or toasted. Remove the skin from poultry and the fat from meat, and you'll find that the lean proteins are the best at giving you the amino acids your body needs without the fat that would cause weight gain.

• Reduce unnecessary added fat such as butter, margarine, creamy dressings and sour cream. These additional sources of fat can certainly make your food taste better, but they will do little good to your body and may even harm it by clogging your arteries. It's best to avoid these foods whenever possible.

• Any snacks you eat should consist of fruits or vegetables, and you can eat almost as much of the latter as you like. Fruit should be eaten in moderation due to the high sugar content of many fruits, but vegetables can be a great snack that you can eat at any time of the day. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips or a donut, why not reach for carrot sticks or an apple?

• Be careful when eating out as there are many different foods and ingredients that add fat to your food. The large portions you are served is one thing to pay attention to, as are the dressings on the salads you order. Try not to order foods that come with white bread and keep your orders as health-conscious as possible.

• Always check the nutritional information on everything you buy in the store. If there are ingredients you don't recognize, it's best to avoid purchasing the item. The items you purchase should all be free of preservatives and chemicals and as natural as possible.

• Be careful when drinking. Alcohol is high in sugar and fat and should be consumed in moderation. Soda and juices are also high in sugar, and even low-fat or fat-free juices and drinks should be avoided. Drink only 100% natural juice and water is the best thing you can drink.
