Recent research has found that dizziness that occurs immediately after a person stands increases the likelihood of dementia. The study was published in the journal Neurology. Researchers tracked the medical histories of more than 2,100 elderly people for more than 12 years. They found that people with dizziness caused by orthostatic hypotension - a sudden drop in blood pressure while standing - had a 40% higher risk of developing dementia. The greater the drop in blood pressure, the more likely they were to develop dementia.

Exactly how sudden dizziness increases your chances of dementia is unknown. However, doctors believe the mechanism could involve "direct damage to blood vessels or progressive stiffness of the arteries," said leading cardiologist Dr. Guy Mintz.

Two supplements prevent dizziness & balance problems

Dizziness or balance problems can be difficult for doctors to treat. But a new study shows there may be a simple, natural solution. As described in the journal Neurology, researchers studied 900 subjects who suffered from benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This is usually triggered by changing the position of your head. The scientists divided the test subjects into two groups. One had people with low vitamin D. The other had people with higher levels of the vitamin. The low-D group took supplements containing 400 IU of vitamin D and 500 mg of calcium twice daily. The High-D group took no supplements.

47% of those who didn't take the supplements had a recurrence of dizziness. Only 38% of the supplement group had a recurrence. Dr. Ji-Soo Kim was one of the authors of the study. He said the results were exciting because "going to the doctor for head movements" had been the main treatment for BPPV. But it usually only works temporarily.

“Our study suggests that low-cost, low-risk treatment such as vitamin D and calcium tablets can effectively prevent this common and frequently recurring disorder,” said Dr. Kim. Vitamin D and calcium go hand in hand because vitamin D helps your body absorb this important mineral. The best way to get enough calcium is to make sure whole milk is a regular part of your diet. Three quarters of people have vitamin D deficiency. Have your doctor check your vitamin D levels. You want your reading to be between 40 and 60 ng/mL. If it is lower, the best way to increase your levels is with sunlight. Try to get at least 20 minutes of sunlight per day with your arms and legs exposed.

This is not always easy, especially in winter. Additionally, as we age, our bodies gradually lose the ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight. You can compensate for this by eating foods rich in vitamins. This includes wild-caught salmon and other oily fish such as sardines, herring and mackerel.
