Third hand smoke

The smoky plot thickens

Some new research has shown that smoking is no longer just harming yourself - it's been shown that it harms children too. Even if you smoke outside your home.

It saysThird hand smokeand the news is not good.

Hair and clothing carry the toxins

Researchers have found that contamination/toxins from tobacco smoke persist long after the cigarette is put out. The toxins get into the hair and clothing of a smoker (or anyone who is around cigarette smoke), and when that person comes into contact with someone, that person is exposed to these toxins.

Two hundred and fifty strong

These toxins (collectively asFine dust) have been proven to be poisonous and there are 250 of them. 250 toxins! What's worse is that 11 of them are proven to be Class I carcinogens - the most dangerous level of cancer-causing chemicals.

Do it for the kids!

Third-hand smoking has been linked to cognitive deficits (definition: the process of knowing, and more specifically the process of awareness, knowledge, thinking, learning, and judgment) and lower reading scores in children.

Do it for your loved ones!

Even if you are not around children, everyone you come into contact with is exposed to these dangerous toxins.

Do it for yourself!

Something different: smoking and cigarettes are not your friends. Just as many people who overeat feel that food is their friend, many smokers feel that cigarettes are their friend. But they are not.

More ways to quit smoking than skinning a cat

If you find that you can't stop on your own, there's no shame in getting help. There are prescription medications from your doctor for smoking cessation, acupuncture, hypnosis.

Stigmatization, smigmatization

And perhaps psychotherapy is also appropriate. Although there is still a societal stigma that only "crazy people" go to psychotherapy, there's actually a big joke here: Some of society's most balanced and accomplished people go to psychotherapy—they just don't tell everyone about it. So if you cling to these outdated views about therapy, you're really missing out.
