Psychotherapeutic processes are intended to deal with psychological problems ranging from mild ones, such as a depressed mood, to more subtle ones, such as the controversial problem known as dissociative identity disorder. Therefore, one aspect of dealing with these types of problems is opening up one's emotions to the therapist. Denied emotions, things we feel that we don't want to admit, is one of the root causes of many psychological and psychiatric problems. The problem with denied emotions in psychotherapy

In the psychotherapeutic setting, this can become quite a dilemma, as communication is crucial to the functioning of the psychotherapeutic process, and honest communication at that. Of course, emotional honesty can be a very difficult task for the client or patient.

So for a competent therapist, there should be a wealth of clues that he or she can deal with. Slips of the tongue, certain periods of silence, hesitations and pauses, and attempts to change the subject are clues and indicators that a competent therapist should notice. He or she must create a “mind map” of associations to form a comprehensive picture of the client's or patient's psychological state in relation to his or her unconscious mind. The unconscious can be quite difficult to reach. This can be very difficult for the therapist. This happens especially when the client or patient has many psychological defense mechanisms.

If you are the customer, your simple job is to speak and pay attention to the meaning of what you say. The meaningful points of your speech, especially about your emotions or emotional state, can be very revealing. The therapist should of course make even larger (mental) notes on the meaningful points you have established. Provided he or she is competent enough as a therapist, he or she should be able to help you express your feelings in clear and understandable words.

The therapist can help you be more emotionally honest in many ways. When you ask about your physical sensations and dreams, you reach your subconscious. This way you will learn how to express your feelings in a healthy and productive way.

You should remember that you cannot control the entire process. In any case, you are not in favor of a power play in psychotherapy. Remember that you can achieve results with a competent therapist that you trust.
