Home remedies for constipation in infants, toddlers and children
Symptoms of constipation in children are easy to recognize. You will have fewer bowel movements, for example less than 3 per week. Infants under 2 years of age will pass hard or pebbly stools with straining, retention, or painful bowel movements. Children may even have stomach pain, painful bowel movements, or there may be blood in the stool. Fecal or urinary incontinence is also not uncommon.
"Stools with holding maneuvers can be misinterpreted as tension. In infants, back arching and in older infants/toddlers, toe standing, leg extension or rocking back and forth are typical, which prevents anal relaxation. Some children may hide in a corner while standing stiffly or squatting," say paediatricians from NHS Trust, England.
See a doctor if constipation is severe or if your child is younger than 4 months. Mild and moderate constipation can be easily resolved with home remedies. Some ways to relieve constipation include:
1. Fruit juices such as plum, pear or apple juice help to soften stools. Do not give prune juice to infants, even if diluted; it serves as an irritant. Give 2 to 4 ounces of the other juices once daily and 4 to 6 ounces once daily for older infants. Do not water down pear or apple juice. Plum juice can be diluted in a 1:1 ratio. Juice, with the exception of prune juice, is not very helpful for children over 3 years old because their intestines are more efficient and absorb most of the sugar in juice.
2. Foods rich in fiber can help ease bowel movements and relieve constipation. Examples of such foods include whole grains and apricots, sweet potatoes, pears, plums, peaches, plums, beans, peas, broccoli or spinach. Avoid applesauce and carrots; They can cause constipation.
3. Dairy products or refined carbohydrates can be constipating for toddlers. "Avoid cow's, buffalo's or goat's milk when given to a child or baby. If the baby is formula-fed, add water occasionally between meals or replace a meal with water for a week. Stools become hard when water content decreases. Food intake or stools become less or phosphate levels increase," advises Dr. S. Kondekar, pediatrician from Mumbai.
4. Adequate fluid is necessary to relieve constipation. Make sure children are adequately hydrated. However, an excessive amount of fluids does not help.
5. Train your child by motivating and encouraging them. It is important to have a regular toilet routine. Ask older children to sit on the toilet for 10 minutes once a day, especially within 30 minutes of a meal - breakfast or dinner.
6. Avoid baby foods that contain higher casein content or those containing rice cereal. These formulas tend to constipate your baby. Formulas containing iron are good for relieving constipation.
