Osteoporosis occurs due to the combined effect of low bone density and dissolution of the bone's internal microarchitecture. Fractures are most commonly seen in the bones of the wrist, hip, and spine. However, the condition also affects other bones. Osteoporosis leads to a change in bone mineral density and affects bone quality. Bone density is the mineral concentration per unit volume or area of bone. It includes a combination of bone mass and amount of bone loss. Older people, especially menopausal women, are invariably at risk of osteoporosis. However, it is now known that adolescents and children who do not have adequate bone growth tend to develop osteoporosis at a young age. Depending on the extent of the bone's fragility, people may develop fractures from minor actions such as coughing, bending, falling, hitting, or lifting.
Osteoporosis is seen more commonly in Asian men and women and non-Hispanic white men and women. On the other hand, Hispanic women and African American women have a lower risk of osteoporosis.
Causes and risk factors:

Exercises: Resistance exercises such as rubber bands, lifting weights are recommended to increase bone density in older people as well as to improve bone mass and strengthen muscles in young women. Dancing, walking, running, climbing stairs improve reflexes, improve muscles, joint mobility and bone strength. Tai chi is an example of an exercise that promotes good physical balance and prevents falls and fractures.

Vitamin D and calcium: Menopausal women are candidates for bone loss. It is highly recommended to consume milk, figs, yogurt, sardines and salmon rich in calcium. Vitamin D enables the body to absorb calcium. Calcium supplements can also be taken if recommended by the doctor.
Prevent falls: People with osteoporosis should see and hear well to avoid unnecessary falls and broken bones. One must also wear suitable non-slip footwear. Non-slip mats and floor tiles with a matt finish are appropriate in the living area.

Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, lettuce and orange juice (vitamin C) are also useful in preventing osteoporosis.
