What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the skin and the whites of the eyes. It is caused by a buildup of a substance called bilirubin. In many cases, the yellowing is more noticeable in the whites of the eyes than on the skin. Jaundice in newborns is common because their liver needs time to work properly.

The three types of jaundice that affect adults are:

  • Hämolytische Gelbsucht
  • Hepatozelluläre Gelbsucht u
  • Verschlussikterus

Common causes of jaundice

The red blood cells become fragile after a period of 4 months and turn into a yellow colored chemical called bilirubin. The body normally removes bilirubin from the bloodstream by passing it through the liver and to the kidneys for disposal. The liver, which plays an important role in removing the bilirubin from the body, may not be able to do so due to certain reasons as the bilirubin accumulates and causes jaundice.
