Naturopathic allergy testing - old problem, new approach
Are you looking for a way to permanently get rid of your seasonal allergies? In the past, the only medical solution to allergy desensitization was to visit an allergist's office every two weeks and receive a series of painful allergy tests. After a year or two of these recordings, it was possible to “train” your body to stop reacting to the allergic substances in your environment. Aside from being both painful and costly, this approach helped a lot of people.
Newly improved
Allergy shots could soon be a thing of the past. A new treatment called sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is quickly becoming the preferred way to eliminate allergies. This new alternative medicine treatment uses the blood vessels under the tongue to introduce tiny doses of allergy-causing substances into the body instead of allergy testing. These small doses gradually “retrain” the body’s immune system to stop viewing the allergic substances as a problem and to view them as a normal part of the environment. SLIT works on the same general principles as allergy shots, except there is less risk of an adverse effect and there are no shots!
There are several companies that produce sublingual immunotherapy vaccines, but not all of them produce similar products. Some companies use a “master mix” that combines all potential allergens into a single solution. However, researchers from various sources, including the American Association of Otolaryngic Allergists, have published concerns about this approach. First, certain types of allergens can cross-react in solution, greatly reducing the effectiveness of the medication. Second, because master mix solutions contain a variety of allergenic substances, it is likely that the solution will contain some things that the person is not allergic to. These substances can act as “sensitizers” and potentially trigger an allergy.
Before the game
One company, seroSLIT, is taking a more personalized approach to sublingual immunotherapy. This company creates customized SLIT vaccines for patients based on each patient's individual allergies. Determining a person's particular allergies can be done with a simple blood test. These allergy tests measure a person's antibodies to specific allergens, which can be used to determine not only which person is allergic, but also how severe their allergy may be. Using these results, a doctor can then work with seroSLIT to create a custom sublingual allergy vaccine that contains only the relevant allergens.
Taking the SLIT vaccine couldn't be easier. Simply spray the solution under your tongue and you're done. When used correctly, these vaccines can help control allergy symptoms within a few months. However, for best results they should be used for a year or two. After this time your allergies should disappear! The best thing about SLIT is that not only is it painless and works well, but it is also extremely safe for children.
