Herbal medicine refers to the use of seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers of a plant for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside of conventional medicine. It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control, along with advances in clinical research, demonstrate the value of herbal medicine in treating and preventing diseases that cannot be treated by medication.

Indigenous cultures used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed a traditional medical system using herbal therapies. Researchers found that people in different parts of the world tend to use the same or similar plants for the same purpose.

In the early 19th century, when chemical analysis first became available, scientists began extracting and modifying the active compounds from plants. Later, chemists started making their own version of botanicals and over time, the use of herbal medicines declined in favor of pharmaceuticals.

Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some of their primary health care. There are around 600-700 herbal medicines available in Germany, which are prescribed by around 70% of German doctors. Over the past 20 years, public dissatisfaction with prescription medications in the United States, coupled with interest in returning to natural or organic remedies, has led to an increase in the use of herbal medicine for prevention and healing.

In many cases, scientists are unsure which specific ingredient in a particular herb works to treat a condition or disease. Whole herbs contain many ingredients that can work together to produce a positive effect. Many factors determine how effective and herb will be. For example, the type of environment (climate, insects, soil quality) in which a plant grew will influence it, as will how and when it was harvested and processed. Herbs are said to nourish and balance systems and organs that promote recovery. With the right dosage, a trained naturopath can provide relief from a symptom within minutes. If someone tells you that it will take you years to recover because you've had it for years, don't believe a word of it.

The use of herbal supplements has increased dramatically over the past 30 years. Herbal supplements are classified as dietary supplements by the U.S. Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. This means that, unlike prescription medications, herbal supplements can be sold without having to be tested for safety and effectiveness. However, herbal supplements must be made according to manufacturing practices.

Herbs are used together because the combination is more effective and may have fewer side effects. Healthcare providers must consider many factors when recommending herbs, including the type and variety of the plant, the plant's habitat, how it was stored and processed, and whether or not contaminants are present.

Herbal medicine is used to treat many medical conditions such as: B. Autoimmune diseases, viral and bacterial diseases, asthma, eczema, PMS, Crohn's disease, UC, IC, MS, ALS, RA, SLE, migraines, menopausal symptoms, chronic fatigue and irritable syndrome, among others. Herbal supplements are best taken under the guidance of a trained healthcare provider. Be sure to consult your naturopath before taking any herbs. The most effective herbs come in liquid form. Herbal extract delivers results for days. Experienced practitioners can show results within 2-3 days.

The herbs available in most stores come in a variety of forms: teas, syrups, oils, liquid extracts, tinctures, and dry extracts (pills or capsules). Teas can be made from dried herbs steeped in hot water for a few minutes, or by boiling herbs in water and then straining the liquid. Syrups made from concentrated extracts and added to sweet-tasting preparations are often used for sore throats and coughs. Oils are derived from plants and are often used as rubs for massage, either alone or as part of an ointment or cream. Tinctures and liquid extracts are made from herbal ingredients dissolved in a liquid (usually water, alcohol, or glycerin). Tinctures typically have a concentration of 1:5 or 1:10, meaning one part of the herb is prepared with five to ten parts (by weight) of the liquid. Liquid extracts are more concentrated than tinctures and typically have a 1:1 concentration. The extract form is the most concentrated form of an herbal product and is sold as a tablet, capsule, or lozenge.

Herbalists, chiropractors, naturopaths, pharmacists, doctors, and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners can all use herbs to treat illness. Naturopaths believe that the body is constantly striving for balance and that natural therapies can support this process. They are trained in 4-year postgraduate institutes that combine courses in conventional medical science with clinical training in herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutrition and lifestyle counseling.

In some European countries, herbs are classified and regulated as medicines, unlike the United States. The German Commission E, a medical expert panel, is actively researching its safety and effectiveness.

Although still not widely accepted, herbal medicine is being taught more in medical schools and pharmacy schools. More and more healthcare providers are learning about the positive and potentially negative effects of using herbal medicines to treat health problems. Some healthcare providers, including doctors and pharmacists, are trained in herbal medicine. They can help people create treatment plans that use herbs, traditional medications, and lifestyle changes to promote health.
