Is your home infected with this cancerous toxin?
Did you know that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, next to cigarette smoking? This is very concerning as thousands, if not millions, of people in America are currently living with this toxic chemical in their homes. It can be found in every infrastructure including homes, schools and offices. This is a cause for concern in naturopathy across the country. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that one in 15 homes have dangerous levels of radon. This is even higher in Utah, with one in three homes testing with dangerous levels of radon.
How bad is it to live in these conditions? According to Dr. According to Wallace Akerley of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, it would be like smoking a pack or two of cigarettes a day.
What's strange is that radon levels can be very different in homes, even if they're right next to each other.
Other problem areas include Iowa and the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. These have high concentrations of radon levels in the environment. Worldwide, a town called Mallow in Ireland is known for having the highest natural radon levels.
This is a silent killer that causes seven times more deaths than house fires. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this hidden threat and never have their homes tested for this ubiquitous carcinogen. With this in mind, integrative medicine practitioners urge citizens to get their properties tested – for both business and residential purposes. You don't want to wait until a cancer event occurs before you do something about it.
Radon is radioactive
What exactly is radon? It is a radioactive natural gas. It is formed when uranium rocks are mined. These include granite, phosphate rock, limestone and slate. You can find radon in most soil, air and water.
Another reason why naturopathic doctors recommend doing radon tests is because they are difficult to detect. It has no smell or taste and is invisible. The only way to identify this is to use a special test kit.
It has been estimated that 21,000 lung cancer deaths are due to exposure to radon. Between 10 and 25 percent of them do not smoke. In most cases, cancer forms between five and 25 years after exposure to radon.
Smokers at increased risk
If you smoke cigarettes at home and have high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer increases dramatically. The EPA states that if 1,000 smokers were exposed to level 4 pCi/L radon in their lifetime, about 62 of them would develop cancer due to radon exposure. Only about 7 out of 1,000 non-smokers would likely develop cancer due to this radon exposure.
Some have suggested that radioactive phosphate fertilizer may contribute to cigarettes being carcinogenic. In theory, the tobacco grown in this fertilizer absorbs the radon from the soil.
There is little evidence that radon can cause other types of cancer. Between 1968 and 1994, a study was conducted in Denmark indicating that there was a significant association between childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and radon exposure.
Alternative cancer treatment
Luckily, there are natural ways that most patients and people in general can treat and prevent cancer with naturopathic medicine. Chelation and ozone therapy are just some of the treatments you can receive to cleanse your body of harmful toxins.
The best thing to do is to make an appointment with a healthcare practitioner in your area to learn how you can make lifestyle changes to prevent and/or treat the development of cancer. And whatever you do, get your home tested for radon!
