-DR. Denis Waitley, author of “The Psychology of Winning”
We asked this two-time Hall of Fame inductee to share more about his life, current projects, visions and of course his spectacular, inspiring martial arts presentations.
EMC!Good morning and thank you for taking the time to talk to us.
Dr. StanHarris:The pleasure is mine.
EMC!:Can you tell us more about your background?
Dr. Stan Harris:I have two brothers and two half brothers. We grew up in a single family home in the roach and mouse infested projects (Smith Holmes) in Harrisburg, PA. I remember waking up with giant water bugs crawling on my face! When I was playing on a playground at age 6, a gang of teenagers jumped, hit, tarred and bounced me. They left me in a field. Someone found me and took me to the hospital before I suffocated from the thick tar. I grew up wondering if anyone cared, I never heard the words “I love you.” I was neglected, confused and abused - verbally, emotionally, sexually and physically. I was beaten with a steel folding chair across my back and head, as well as a chain (for a dog) at the hands of my mother's boyfriend - without her knowledge, of course.
EMC!:You are a survivor. How did you become interested in karate and martial arts in general?
Dr. Stan Harris:One day my mother won a free month of karate (ShotoKan Karate). She liked it so much that she continued training for quite a while. One day she got into an argument with her boyfriend who was physically abusing me. She knocked him unconscious with a side kick to the jaw. My brothers and I looked at each other in shock. We went to the man on the floor who was frantic and said, "Whatever you do, don't mess with my mommy anymore, because my momma is bad, man; my momma is bad." The event impressed me so much that I began training in Isshin'ryu Karate in hopes that I would learn to protect myself and one day become a champion and get the attention I so craved as a younger child.
EMC!:Would you say that realizing that you can empower yourself by applying the principles of martial arts has sparked your desire to help others empower themselves in their daily lives?
Dr. Stan Harris:Yes. They (the instructors) taught us to have self-discipline before learning self-defense. We have learned that the greatest victory of all is the conquest of self. I wanted to share my newfound power to channel my anger and frustration into something productive. I also wanted others to experience the newfound improved self-image that comes with self-mastery and achievement.
EMC!:Dr. Stan, what are the visions you envision that drive your desire to contribute?
Dr. Stan Harris:I see myself supporting 100 missionaries. I always wanted to be the role model for others that I personally never had. The power of expectation and belief from someone we respect and admire can release vast amounts of contained power. I also envision continuing to offer health seminars across the country (USA).
EMC!:I hear the passion in your words, Dr. Stan. Most people who know you, and even those who are only remotely familiar with you and your work, use the word “passionate” to describe you. Is passion something you work on every day?
Dr. Stan Harris:Certainly. A woman met me at the airport and said, “Whatever you do, I want to be a part of it because you radiate so much compassion and power.” Like John Wesly, I set myself on fire and people come and watch me burn!
EMC!:Whose advice did you benefit from the most?
Dr. Stan Harris:In addition to the Bible, William E. Bailey, who also mentored Jim Rohn, Les Brown and others.
EMC!:Her lectures often include a dynamic demonstration of martial arts. Amazingly, you break 22 inches of bricks with your bare hands using incredible speed and strength. Can you describe the impact it has on your audience?
Dr. Stan Harris:Because our generation is so visual. I like to use visual aids that they can relate to to give my message additional impact. People are often enchanted, and they truly understand that we can break through our limitations, no matter how hard or difficult!
EMC!:That certainly paints a picture. Can you share some examples of how people's lives have changed for the better after seeing your groundbreaking presentation?
Dr. Stan Harris:Here's what Rita Graves from Texas said:
"Dr. Stan Harris was so inspiring! He touched my heart tremendously. Words cannot tell you how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to meet him in person and hear him speak. Wow... we could feel all his enthusiasm! every guest. It filled our hearts, minds and souls with inspiration, motivation, empowerment, knowledge, strength and success. Now we can continue to move forward positively knowing that we are all worthy of the great things that still to come.”
Ned Rae said: "Dr. Stan Harris, who taught us all how to master our fears and have a life-changing "breakthrough" when we all broke our 1-inch boards with our fear on the back. We see everyone from 8 years old to 81 year olds lining up to take their first step beyond their fears by breaking the board with their hand, a real “breakthrough” was worth the cost of participation.”
Cheryl Rae, Executive Director of her company, reported to her CEO:
"The highlight for me was Dr. Stan's 'breakthrough' performance. I have to admit, when he handed out a board to everyone, I wasn't sure I could break it. It was a tough board! But when I saw an 8-year-old boy do it and Maggie, 81, do it... that was it. If they could do it, then I could do it too. And with Dr. Stan training me, I got it on the first try done! It was so easy and nothing happened to my hand - it was an amazing moment for me. I get emotional just thinking about it.”
EMC!:Dr. Stan, it's no surprise that your workshops and presentations are in such demand. Tell us; Who can help you cope with the numerous daily opportunities and invitations to lectures that you keep coming across?
Dr. Stan Harris:Currently I do everything myself; but I will have to find someone to take care of it because the demands are becoming too great. I try to keep a personal touch as long as possible.
EMC!:What projects are you currently working on?
Dr. Stan Harris: Cynthia Kersey (author of the best-selling “Unstoppable” and the most recent “Unstoppable Women”) and I are co-authors of a book called “Celebrating Unstoppable African Americans.” Additionally, Jack Zufelt, author of another number one bestseller, The DNA of Success, and I are producing a CD series called How to Be a Black Belt in Your Business.” Then there is MyOpp (My Online Portfolio Presentation). You see, residual income is great, but multiple streams of passive residual income are the best. MyOpp blends the lessons of the past, the techniques of the present and the technology of the future to ensure success. Their mission includes: “ Empowering entrepreneurs with viable solutions, systems and technologies that help leverage the Internet to to create multiple residual income streams.” When I rose to the top of three companies at the same time, people asked me, "How do you do it? You must have a special talent or skill?" Well, this new system allows people who just know how to point and click to be successful. MyOpp is the Walmart; the Microsoft of marketing. EMC!:They all sound fascinating. And finally, what are two of your most valued values and why?
Dr. Stan Harris:A; My faith – It keeps me going. Without the Lord I would be nothing and I could do nothing of real value. And secondly, to stay true to myself because I get to look at myself in the mirror every day. I like what and who I see. It also gives me personal strength with others.
EMC!:Thank you, Dr. Stan Harris. You must be one of the busiest – and happiest – people on earth!
Dr. Stan Harris:It was an honor to take part. Can I leave you with my Attitude Adjuster?
EMC!We would be honored.
Dr. Stan Harris:
There are limitless possibilities around me,
Before me are endless possibilities,
Within me is the One who has infinite power,
Behind me – who cares?
I'm doing it in a great way and it's getting even better, watch out world, I'm coming!
