The flow is plentiful on a certain day of the month. However, period discomfort can generally last for three days.
The female reproductive system is indeed miraculous. Every month the ovaries produce an egg that is deposited in the fallopian tube. The uterine wall known as the endometrium thickens and there is increased blood flow throughout the reproductive system. This is all in preparation for pregnancy. However, if the woman does not become pregnant, all of these things must be eliminated from the body. This is called a period. Once expulsion occurs, the ovaries produce a new egg and the cycle lasts another month.
Women may face several difficulties during their menstrual flow. There is increased moisture in the vaginal area and infections can occur. Women may experience fever, extreme pain in the groin, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, etc. For some women the effects are more aggressive than for others. And the most worrying thing is that the symptoms can recur month after month. The biological term for menstrual problems is dysmenorrhea.
In Ayurveda, menstruation (i.e. the flow of menstruation) is viewed as the excess Pitta flowing out of the body. It is called Raja. Therefore, menstrual flow is also known as Raja Pravritti. Although menstruation is a typical Pitta phenomenon, effects on Vata and Kapha are also observed. Some women experience insomnia and mood swings during their period. This is Vata Vitation. Some women gain weight. This is Kapha Vitiation.

b) Asafetida (Ferula fetida)
Asafetida is known to increase the secretion of the female hormone progesterone. This makes menstruation easier. Using asafetida gum fried in ghee and mixed with goat milk and a spoonful of honey for a month can relieve pain during menstruation and also reduce blood flow.
c) Asoka (Saraca indica)
The bark of Asoka tree is given to women who experience extreme blood loss during menstruation due to leucorrhoea or uterine fibroids. The plant has a stimulating effect on the uterine wall and the mucous layer in the reproductive tract.
d) Bamboo (bamboo-bamboo)
Bamboo acts as an emmenagogue that stimulates menstruation. Its leaves are prescribed for this purpose. To promote and regulate menstrual flow, regular consumption of bamboo leaves is prescribed.
e) Bloodroot (Achillea millefolium)
The hot infusion of bloodwort leaves is taken as an emmenagogue. A decoction of the herb can correct irregular periods. The herb also yields an oil that can be used in the treatment of female reproductive disorders.
f) Chicory (Chichorium intybus)
Chicory seeds are made into a decoction to treat problems with menstrual irregularities.
g) Dill (Anethum sowa)
This fragrant herb is effective in stimulating the menstrual cycle. It helps women with delayed periods to get their periods on time. Young anemic girls are prone to spasmodic menstruation, which can be very painful. A decoction of dill is prepared with the leaves of parsley to treat such problems.
h) Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Cold climates can sometimes lead to painful and irregular periods. To remedy such problems, an infusion of ginger sweetened with sugar is taken.
i) Henna (Lawsonia alba)
Henna is a coolant. Suppositories from its leaves are prepared and inserted into the vagina for women who have problems with excessive menstruation.
j) Hermal (Peganum harmala)
Hermal is a little-known herb but is regularly prescribed in Ayurveda for menstrual problems such as painful menstruation and irregular periods.
k) Indian aloe (Aloe Vera)
Indian aloe is a uterine stimulant. Therefore, it is given for painful menstruation.
l) Indian spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)
Jatamansi is a very popular Indian herb used to treat painful and irregular periods.
m) Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)
Lemongrass is used for painful and difficult menstruation. It can be taken in the form of a tea.
(2) Nutritional treatments for menstruation
The following diet tips are beneficial for women with painful or irregular periods:
1 Avoid all constipating foods, especially in the last week of the menstrual cycle. These include fried foods, sour foods and protein-rich legumes.
2 Fish is a good dietary indication for painful periods. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids that help relieve cramps during menstruation. Meat, poultry and dairy products must be avoided.
3 Among vegetables, white gourd, papaya, drumstick, snake gourd, bitter gourd and cucumber are good for dysmenorrhea. Potatoes, yellow squash and eggplant must be avoided.
(3) Ayurvedic treatments for menstruation
In Ayurveda, Kumari is the remedy of choice for menstrual problems. This is none other than the aloe vera plant. It is taken in the form of Kumarasava in a dose of six teaspoons twice a day. There is a special preparation called Raja Pravartani Vati which contains aloe and asafetida as the main ingredients. This medication is taken in the form of pills - two twice a day in the week before your period is due.
(4) Home remedies for menstruation
Fry 1 asafetida in ghee and add a teaspoon of it to buttermilk. Have this once daily in case of dysmenorrhea.
2 Mix some sesame seeds in a glass of water. Drink this twice a day if you have menstrual pain.
3 Eat salads with cooked beetroot or beetroot juice.
The following exercises help in relieving menstrual pain:-
a) Take a sturdy chair and stand behind it and keep your hands firmly on the back of the chair. Lift one heel and then the other. Continue this for about ten minutes. You can also do squats.
b) Lie on your back on a firm bed. Fold your legs and bring your knees up to your chin. Repeat this ten times.
