As women, we know that the state of our sexual health and changes in our periods can be a good indicator of overall health and health problems.
A co-worker recently went to see her doctor and said she had gained weight, had irregular periods, and just felt generally tired and weak.
It turned out she had an undiagnosed case of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which messed up her hormones and massively increased the amount of testosterone in her body.
As anyone who has heard of this condition knows, it can have a huge impact on your lifestyle, including fertility and reproductive health.
As well as the general mess with the body by destroying the delicate balance of hormones it needs to keep itself stable and healthy.
My friend said the doctor prescribed metformin and hormone-stabilizing tablets. Apparently they worked, but she wasn't particularly happy with the idea of taking pills for the rest of her life, so she looked for other options.
How does a hormone imbalance affect me?
A woman's body requires two main hormones to function. estrogen and progesterone. It is these hormones that control the reproductive cycle, menstrual cycle and fertility in women, as well as having a major impact on mood and overall health.
So it stands to reason that hormone imbalance causes major problems with a woman's reproductive cycle, including irregular periods, menstrual problems, mood swings, weight gain, increased likelihood of osteoporosis, heart disease and even breast cancer.
While there are several reasons a woman could develop a hormonal imbalance, such as stress, diet, or weight gain, the two biggest factors are generally the birth control pill and the perimenopausal stage of life.
Hormone-based birth control pills rely on high doses of estrogen to prevent ovulation and progestin, synthetic progesterone, to thin the uterine lining. Because of how they work, hormonal birth control pills contain doses of estrogen that are up to four times higher than those found naturally in a woman's body during her menstrual cycle.
Then menopause also causes major changes in a woman's hormonal cycle. As your ovaries age, they naturally release lower levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which cause major changes in your body and can have enormous negative effects on health and quality of life for years to come.
While there are many ways to treat this, including hormone replacement therapy and other hormone-balancing medications, there are a wealth of other options, including one that many people would otherwise overlook.
Acupuncture!
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used as a traditional treatment in the East for centuries and is an alternative therapy that is becoming increasingly accepted, so many reputable and high-profile medical sources have begun offering acupuncture treatments alongside more conventional medical treatments.
The therapy itself involves inserting thin needles into key points around the body, generally along nerve pathways or around specific organs.
According to traditional understanding, the body is full of energy, commonly called chi or ki.
It is this energy that keeps us alive, and inhibiting its flow through the body, particularly through key points, is believed to lead to illness and suffering.
According to Eastern philosophy, the needles used in acupuncture release the flow of energy into these blocked points, balancing your life energy so that the body can heal itself naturally.
In the West, where research into acupuncture is underway, its action is believed to be neurophysiological in nature, but it is still not fully understood.
Inserting acupuncture needles is known to have distinct effects on the body, causing nerve stimulation, releasing muscles, and even overriding brain signals.
There are also measurable changes in body chemicals in patients undergoing treatment.
Although it may not be fully understood, the benefits of acupuncture treatment are widely recognized...
To the point that it is regularly offered as an alternative treatment by most doctors, and more research studies are conducted every year to understand how acupuncture exerts all of its healing properties.
Can acupuncture balance our hormones?
When it comes to hormone imbalances, the studies are clear.
Women who received daily acupuncture sessions showed massive improvements in several areas, comparable to the results of women who were tested simultaneously with prescription metformin pills.
Both groups showed a significant improvement in male hormone levels in the blood, as well as massive changes in cholesterol levels, insulin markers and blood sugar.
Incredibly, the women who were prescribed acupuncture actually lost more weight and saw a much quicker response when it came to balancing their menstrual cycles.
Additionally, several other studies have shown that regular acupuncture treatments can have health-promoting effects throughout the body, including stabilizing fat-burning hormone production by the kidneys and liver, as well as the production of the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin in the brain.
As for my friend, she started an acupuncture course at the local health center. Within two weeks she was back to her old self and had nothing but good things to say about the staff and treatment. According to her, she was not the only woman being treated there for her condition, and the amount of people and illnesses they saw was apparently overwhelming.
So if you have a hormonal problem and your doctor prescribes you a course of pills, always remember that, as always, you have other options. Acupuncture is available across the country, so simply search for a doctor near you and book a short course.
The results might surprise you!
