4 pediatrician-recommended ways to calm a teething baby

You finally have your baby's sleep routine under control. So when you tiptoe out of your sleeping baby's nursery, you foolishly think you've made it.

But far from it! Your baby is teething and you can't seem to do anything about it.

"You're spared for the first one to three months, but after that the teeth keep coming back," says pediatrician Ei Ye Mon, MD.

If you're in the teething phase - which occurs between 4 months of age and around 2 years of age - you don't have to be stuck there. Dr. Ye Mon gives you her best teething remedies so you and your baby can live your best life, one tooth at a time.

Signs that your baby is teething

All babies are different. This also applies to the symptoms of teething. For some, there is no sign that a new tooth will erupt. Others may show one or more of these symptoms:

  • Gereiztheit.

“It usually takes three or four days, but once the tooth breaks through the gums, symptoms should diminish,” explains Dr. Ye Mon.

But don't be surprised if it happens again. You can experience teething déjà vu up to 20 times because there are so many baby teeth lying in wait.

Signs it's more than teething

"It's normal for children to be upset about gum pain, but they shouldn't be heartbroken," explains Dr. Ye Mon.

Childhood illnesses shouldn't last for weeks either. If so, you should take your baby to the pediatrician to find out if something else is the cause.

Other symptoms that a doctor should check for include:

  • Fieber von 38,5 Grad oder mehr
  • Diarrhöe
  • Laufende Nase
  • Untröstliches Weinen

Pediatrician-approved teething remedies

If all signs point to a teething baby, Dr. Ye Mon these simple remedies for teething:

Damp, cold cloths

Freeze a clean, wet cloth or rag and give it to your baby to chew on. “This helps reduce inflammation in the gums,” she says. “Parents can also massage the gums with the cloth.

Cold food

Serve cold foods such as applesauce, yogurt, and chilled or frozen fruit (for babies eating solid foods).

Teething biscuit

You can offer teething cookies from 8 to 12 months of age. But pay attention to gum hygiene. "To protect against tooth decay, wipe the gum area and teeth with a clean cloth. As they grow more teeth, introduce a toothbrush," advises Dr. Ye Mon. "Introduce this routine. You don't even need toothpaste. Just brushing off the plaque can help prevent future tooth decay.

Teethers and toys

They're easy for little fists to grip and provide the pressure needed to soothe sore gums. "Avoid freezing the rings with gel, as they can break more easily if your child chews on them," she says. “Instead, use the refrigerator to keep them cold.

Be careful with these common childhood illness medications or avoid them altogether:

Topical medications containing lidocaine or benzocaine

“There are no studies showing the long-term benefits of these products,” warns Dr. Ye Mon. "In addition, the effect only lasts for a short period of time. In the meantime, your baby swallows the drug and gets high amounts of the drug into the bloodstream."

Vegetable products

“There are not enough studies on the effectiveness of herbal remedies for teething,” she says. "Herbs are medications. They are still broken down by the liver and kidneys. We don't know the long-term side effects, so there is a risk."

Acetaminophen or ibuprofen

If you want to give your restless child one of these medications, Dr. Ye Mon to start with one dose. "If a dose is no longer sufficient, you should talk to your pediatrician before increasing the dose. Also check the Food and Drug Administration website for information about the safety of medications for children.

When it comes to your teething baby, it's better to be safe than sorry.

The best way to find out is to use our intelligent search function or browse through the categories. We have always chosen our headings so that you can tell from the outset whether it is an article about the effectiveness or an educational article against the effectiveness of the home remedy. Since we are constantly releasing new and updated articles, we cannot determine the exact number of home remedies, otherwise we would have to revise each article again.
