Whether you suffer from psoriasis frequently or only occasionally, it's always good to know how to best relieve the symptoms. Even better if you can do this without having to make a doctor's appointment.
To get a handle on the best home remedies for psoriasis, we spoke to dermatologist Sean McGregor, DO.
What is psoriasis?
According to Dr. McGregor, psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes an inflammatory rash. The thick, reddish patches of scaly skin can appear anywhere on the body, but some of the most common locations include:
- Knie
 - Ellenbogen
 - Gesicht oder Kopfhaut
 - Um die Finger- und Zehennägel herum
 - Handflächen
 - Unterer Rücken

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease in which the immune system attacks the skin, which in turn causes inflammation and leads to the formation of new skin cells. Because these new skin cells are formed much faster than normal - every three or four days instead of every 30 or so days - the accumulation of new cells creates the flaky skin.
Doctors don't know exactly what triggers this immune system reaction, but Dr. McGregor says: "We know there are genetic influences and recently we have found links to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure and some heart problems."
Natural remedies and home remedies for psoriasis
When it comes to psoriasis, the first thing you should do is talk to your healthcare provider. Not every home remedy works equally well for every person, and your doctor can help you create a treatment plan that is right for you and your specific condition.
Moisturizing shower baths
Moisturizing shower gels or baths are helpful in relieving two symptoms of psoriasis: dryness and itching. “These products help soften flaky skin and moisturize the skin, which may reduce itching,” explains Dr. McGregor. In addition, these products usually do not contain fragrances or other ingredients that could further irritate the skin.
Oatmeal baths
Dr. McGregor recommends oatmeal baths to temporarily relieve itching, dryness, and flaking skin. Of course, this is not oat flakes in the traditional sense, but rather so-called colloidal oat flakes, a finely ground version that dissolves in the bathtub or is found in lotions and soaps. It is often used for other skin diseases such as eczema.
Epsom salt
Like oatmeal baths, a warm bath with Epsom salts can help reduce inflammation and remove flakes from the skin. While there isn't much scientific data on the subject, the popular theory is that the magnesium found in salt aids in this relief.
Coal tar
Coal tar is a well-known remedy that is available in various forms, including shampoo, ointment and soap. “It calms the inflammation caused by psoriasis, which can help provide relief,” says Dr. McGregor.
However, keep in mind that it can be a bit greasy and may stain clothing or skin. As with all creams and topical ointments, you can prevent stains by wrapping the applied area in plastic wrap. “Speak to a dermatologist before doing this,” advises Dr. McGregor. “It should be safe for adults, but I don’t recommend it for children.”
Salicylic acid
Like the aforementioned topical shower gels, facial cleansers containing salicylic acid, which are also commonly used to treat acne and blackheads, can have an anti-inflammatory effect and cleanse flaky skin.
“One limitation with cleansers containing coal tar and salicylic acid is that they can cause skin irritation in some people,” says Dr. McGregor. “We often recommend talking to your doctor first and trying the remedies on a small, specific area of skin to see how you react.”
cortisone and hydrocortisone
Here too, according to Dr. McGregor, it's all about reducing inflammation, and cortisone and hydrocortisone creams do just that. "They can help reduce the redness and scaling of the skin that occurs with psoriasis," he says.
