10 Incredible Home Remedies for Warts on Foot You Should Know

Warts are a non-cancerous lesion that can grow on the skin of both children and adults. Warts spread through skin contact. Foot warts are a type of wart that grows on the sole of the foot.

Foot warts can go away without treatment, but some safe and effective home remedies can speed healing.

In this article we present various home remedies for foot warts.

What are foot warts?

Salicylic acid is a possible home remedy for treating plantar warts.
Foot warts are benign growths that appear on the top layer of skin on the sole of the foot.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), they are usually skin-colored and rough to the touch, but some may have brown or gray-black, flat and smooth lesions.

Some people confuse plantar warts with calluses, but warts can be painful if you press on them.

Although warts can go away on their own, there are treatments that speed up the healing of plantar warts.

Home remedies to treat warts on feet

Here are some home remedies that will help you get rid of foot warts soon.

Salicylic acid

Many over-the-counter wart treatment products contain salicylic acid as the main active ingredient. Salicylic acid for wart treatment is available in gel, liquid or patch form.

According to the AAD, you should soak the wart in warm water before applying salicylic acid once daily. Sometimes the healthy skin surrounding the wart can become painful or sore.

In this case, the AAD recommends temporarily stopping treatment and restarting it after a few days. Warts take weeks to disappear, even with effective therapy, so a short interruption in treatment does not significantly affect the time it takes for the wart to disappear.

tape

Applying tape or patches to warts is a practical and inexpensive treatment.

The AAD recommends changing the tape every few days, which can cause the wart's top layer of skin to peel off. After repeated use, the wart may eventually peel off.

However, studies have not confirmed the effectiveness of this home remedy. A 2020 study published in the journal Dermatologic Therapy Trusted Source showed that traditional cryotherapy, or freezing in a dermatologist's office, is more effective than therapy with tape or wart patches. However, the study suggests that tape therapy appears to be safe and may be effective in certain circumstances.

Ice spray for home

Another product available over the counter is ice spray for warts.

The manufacturers state that the freezing spray freezes the wart in a similar manner to cryotherapy. However, cryotherapy uses much colder temperatures to destroy the wart.

According to an older study from 2006 (Trusted Source), doctors use liquid nitrogen with a temperature of -196°C.

Freezing sprays from the pharmacy can only freeze the skin to -70 °C and do not work as quickly as liquid nitrogen.

Treatment with home freezing sprays may take longer. Even after cryotherapy, it may take several months for improvement to occur.

Cryotherapy works better on common warts than plantar warts, according to a 2012 study published in American Family Physician.

Tea tree oil

Some people use tea tree oil for warts and other skin infections.

An older 2008 study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice reports a case in which warts on a child's finger were successfully treated with tea tree oil.

In this study, lesions were treated with tea tree oil once per day for 12 days. The wart disappeared, and the researchers reported that the affected area healed completely after 12 days.

It is uncertain whether this treatment is effective for plantar warts. There is not enough research to support the effectiveness of tea tree oil for removing foot warts.

Note that tea tree oil comes in different strengths. Some of these can be applied directly to the skin, others need to be diluted in a carrier oil. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

iodine

A 2015 study published in the journal Dermatology and Therapy reported the effectiveness of a topical 2% povidone-iodine solution in treating common warts.

Doctors and other healthcare professionals may use iodine supplements to cleanse a person's skin before surgery or other procedures that break the skin barrier.

The preparation the researchers used in this study contained iodine, but they added other ingredients that are not available in pharmacies.

Although the results were promising, there is not enough research to confirm the effectiveness of over-the-counter iodine for treating plantar warts.
